Souvenirs on the cheap (the best flea market shopping around): Part II, America

11_46_23_webYou'd expect the land of the 20-foot roadside cactus attraction and the velvet Elvis painting to have some really interesting souvenirs. And you'd be right. But state name mugs and Welcome to Newark T-shirts aren't nearly as kitschy or interesting as hip-swingin' hula dolls made in the '60s, kissing peach salt shakers bought in Georgia in the '30s, or--rarity of rarities--a Chinese menu from the original Ruby Foo's Den, swiped from the establishment in 1953. You can make your fellow travelers jealous by finding treasures like these at America's greatest flea markets:

Renninger's, Kutztown, PA
Famous for its vast acres of farmland and Amish-style quilts and hearty cooking, Kutztown also hides a secret store of major goodies from America's past. The enormous, dimly lit indoor flea market is an ideal spot to hunt for collectible glassware, dolls, and even handmade items from the surrounding rural communities.
Favorite find: A hand cut pink ring made of resin and shaped like a bouquet of flowers, from the 1920s--under $10.

Stormville, NY
You'll want serious walking shoes, sunscreen, head covering, a water bottle and a smart way to find your car (flag, anyone?) when you pull into this giant flea market in semi-rural upstate New York--because it's held on a gigantic, treeless airfield. In dry weather, the dust from the ground will coat you to your ankles, and the sun will blaze down and cook your noggin, so be ready. This one's famous for costume jewelry, old tin advertising signs, some toys and ceramics--plus a good helping of 'junk heaps' where even the seller isn't sure what he's got there.
Favorite find: 1950s stuffed Steiff squirrel--$16

Brimfield, MA
Bring all of the suggested items for Stormville, plus stamina: with over 5,000 dealers, expect to be completely overwhelmed. Look for furniture, large items, jewelry, glassware and just about any oddball item that you can't find anywhere else (old time dealers who don't trust eBay will show up at Brimfield).
Favorite find: 1960s Blythe doll with color-changing eyes (I should've bought it but didn't. Take the lesson: buy it when you see it, or you may never see it again!)
