Beaches with Babies and Toddlers
We loved going to the Beach when our son was a baby and enjoy it even more now that he is a toddler. It really is one of the few vacations or day trips that you can really enjoy almost like it was before you had children. There's some obvious safety issues; sunblock, umbrellas, hats, drink lots and lots of water, water flotation devices, watch the surf, etc. It also helps to plan ahead; pack lunches (hint: bring some fruit), bring lots of drinks, swimming diapers, changes of clothes etc. I also recommend heading to the beach early to avoid the crowds and to enjoy some hours before the sun hits its peak.
My tips for really enjoying yourself
- If you're heading to the beach with your spouse or significant other, plan on 'tag teaming' who's watching the little one and who's getting some 'my time'.
- Be a kid again and build that sand castle.
- Take your time introducing the water to baby/toddler.
- Watch out for ditches in the sand that people leave behind.
- Bring the camera. Always some great shots...
- Water shoes. I highly recommend.
- Turn off the cell phone.
- Watch for signs of baby/toddler getting over-tired. If you see that's happening and baby/toddler is avoiding the nap then my recommendation is to head home for the day. (All the more reason to get a head start).
