There are articles on surviving a plane ride with your kids (see previous post) and others that help you through airport delays (here is a good one). On my last family trip, I discovered that getting through airport security can be an equal or greater challenge. The basic problem is, you need to show the security agent your travel documents, get through security (dealing with coats, keys, cell phones, shoes, laptops, etc.), and hold on to your child or children at the same time. Carrying your stroller? Now you need to pull your child out and fold it up. Of course your kids will be distracted by the crowds, the shops, and the planes!
Here are some basic tips to make your life easier:
1) If there is more than one parent or adult, then have one person in charge of the documentation and carry on luggage while the other tends to the child or children.
2) Carry your on board items in a knapsack to make it easy to take off and put through the security screening.
3) Get to the airport early. If you hit any surprises, then you'll have plenty of time to adjust. Avoid putting yourself in a situation where you need to rush or potentially panic.
4) Travel light. Only carry the basic items in your carry on luggage.
5) Before getting to security put your keys, wallet, and cellphone into your carry on luggage. This way, you don't have to fuss with them when you're getting through security.
6) Wear loafers or shoes that are easy to slide off and on.
7) If you need to take a stroller, do yourself a favor and buy a light weight travel stroller. Some of these go for as little as $30 and good ones or often under $100.
8) Explain to your kids what will happen at the airport. I firmly believe that prepping kids, even an 18 month old on what they will see minimizes the surprises and eases them through the process.
9) Keep up to date on the latest security rules. No liquids...
10) Avoid bringing your car seat. If you're renting a car, then put in for the car seat. If you're visiting relatives, ask them to pickup an inexpensive car seat for your stay.
